AUGUSTA: The new reconstructed I-20/I-520 interchange is open to traffic nine months ahead of schedule.
Work on the $191.9 million interchange reconstruction project began June 2007 and had a July 31, 2010 contract completion date. The project, awarded April 25, 2007, included:
- Replacing the old cloverleaf I-20/I-520 interchange with two flyover ramps;
- 6.25 miles of widening of I-20 beginning at Belair Road;
- Collector-distributor lanes;
- A newly reconstructed Wheeler Road/I-520 interchange;
- A grade-separated interchange on Bobby Jones Expressway at Scott Nixon Memorial Blvd;
- Sound barrier walls at various locations
Additionally, another Richmond County project, the I-20 reconstruction and widening project, was completed on time. The $51.6 million project, awarded to The Lane Construction Corporation on July 30, 2007, had a contract completion date of October 31, 2009. Work began on August 13, 2007 on this project, widening I-20 to three lanes, from Warren Road to the Augusta Canal, and included new bridges over Washington Road and Riverwatch Parkway.
